Electricity and Information - Lesson 4 Binary images

Today's tasks

1.  Share your 2 spreadsheets (Anyone with the link) and paste the 2 links to your Blog post.

2.  Explain that images are made up of pixels in a bitmap.

3.  Explain how the number of pixels relates to the size of the image file.

4.  In terms of file size (or memory), what do the binary numbers '1' and '0' represent?

5.  Write down how many bits are in a byte, how many bytes in a kilobyte, how many kilobytes in a megabyte - in full sentences.

6.  How does the number of bits relate to the number of colours available?

7.  Relate this work to work from previous units, eg creating an app...

Finish this, this lesson.  It is your STAR marked assessment!

Electricity and Information Lesson 3 - Binary numbers

Binary numbers!

1.  Go to Learning Computing - Electricity & Information - Lesson 3.

2.  Open Activity 1 worksheet - File - Make a copy.

3.  Work through the tasks on each sheet:
Task 1 & 2
Tasks 1 - 4
Tasks 1 - 4

4.  Open Activity 2 worksheet - File - Make a copy.
Task 1
Task 1
Tasks 1 - 2

5. Share all worksheets to Anyone with the Link and copy/paste to a blog post titled the same as this one.

6.  On your post, explain what binary code is and how the computer uses it.  Link this to app programming.    Publish!

Electricity and Information Homework link - due in 2nd December

Here is a link to an alternative homework as the link on the Learning Computing website does not work.

http://britton.disted.camosun.bc.ca/binary.swf

You need to practise the game and then screenshot your best score.  Either paste that onto a Google doc, share it correctly (Anyone with the Link)and copy/paste the link to a blog post called Homework OR paste the screenshot directly on to your homework post.
if you paste directly to your blog post, please make sure that the image is visible, sometimes they are not when I go to view it.  Probably best to go the Google doc route to be sure I can see it to mark it!

Due in 2nd December!

Electricity and Information Lesson 1

Electricity and Information - lesson 1

Your work for this lesson!

1.  Go to Learning Computing website and open up the Unit Electricity and Information - Lesson 1.

2.  Open the presentation at the top of the page and read through the information there - you will need to use this info for your blog post work.

3.  Go back to Lesson 1 and watch the Starter video about electrical circuits.

4. Open a new blog post and title it 'Lesson 1 Electricity and Information'.

5.  On your post, write about the following:

a) Explain what atoms are (band 4)
b) Explain why electrons flow around a circuit (band 4)
c) Explain how electricity is used to produce binary code (band 6)
For this last task, it might be useful to research the answer on Google or you could go to Year 7 on the Learning Computing website  and to the Building a Computer unit.  There's a lesson there about storage which talks about binary code in the teacher's presentation at the top of that lesson page.

6.  When you have finished this work, make sure you publish  your post!

If you still have time left - you could start work on the homework for this unit.  The link and information is on the first page of the Electricity and Information unit, where all the lessons are listed.
You'll like the homework!!
